Position Title:  Museum Security Guard and weekend visitor service
Status:  Part-time
Position Reports to:    Guest Services Coordinator

Summary:    This position is responsible for supervision of the museum from a safety and security perspective, but also has extensive public contact. This position opens and closes the galleries to the public on a daily basis; patrols the galleries, non-public spaces and classroom spaces during open hours to deter theft and vandalism; document building needs; and monitor public safety.  This position is also the main museum contact person on the weekends.  This person greets and directs visitors throughout the museum; tabulates the number of visitors who enter; answers the telephone offering information about the museum and programs; registers visitors for special events; monitors building usage, and assists when possible with booking tours, classes, etc. on weekends, thus supplementing duties of the weekday staff. 

This position will assist with monitoring climate controls and recording temperature changes in the galleries This position has a key to the building and an alarm access number for opening and closing the building.  This position performs other duties as required.

Essential Functions:
1.    Opens and closes the building, monitors  humidification and temperature according to the established procedures.
2.    Is responsible for setting alarms, turning on/off lights, checking for object location and damage to a collection object.
3.    Patrols exhibition, public and non-public spaces for building and patron safety, vandalism, damage to artwork or potential theft.
4.    Must be observant of objects out of place or exhibits that need maintenance such as lighting or labels requiring repair.
5.    Greets visitors and monitors traffic, records attendance, and offers general assistance for the building.
6.    Assists visitors and telephone respondents with questions and information.
7.    Handles problem or disruptive behavior.
8.    Registers participants for special events, classes, programs and tours.
9.    Performs first response safety if necessary and contacts emergency personnel.
10.    Completes any necessary incident reports.
11.    Check for potential safety hazards while circulating the building.
12.    Checks for potential maintenance problems while circulating the building.
13.    Reports lights that are out, condition of exhibits, labels, etc.
14.    Reports to the reception desk staff or next security guard to continue information flow.
15.    Other duties as requested.

Qualifications:
•    Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
•    Must be 18 years or older..
•    Ability to follow security procedures and be able to enforce museum policy.
•    Able to handle light maintenance on weekends if circumstances require it.
•    Must be courteous and tactful in written and oral communication.
•    Must be able to respond quickly in an emergency situation.
•    Must have the ability to circulate actively throughout a three-level space.
•    Responsible and reliable to work with a minimum of supervision.
•    Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
•    Must be capable of taking responsibility for an alarm system.
•    Must have some familiarity with MS Word, Excel or similar programs and email for reports and records.
•    Able to handle monetary transactions as needed.
•    Must have qualifications to meet appropriate bonding and insurability requirements.

Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory duties.

Language Skills:
Communicate tactfully and effectively with visitors and the general public orally on site, by telephone, and in written form.

Mathematical Ability:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to handle monetary transactions.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
High school diploma required. Must possess or be willing to train in CPR or first response procedures within the first six months of employment.  Bonding and insurability requirements per the museum’s policies and the museum’s insurance carrier(s).

Physical Demands:
The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.  This position requires the employee have the ability to sit, talk and hear The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires the ability to climb stairs several times during the working period, walk throughout the entire structure of the mansion and additional building, including the lower level.

Environmental Adaptability:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that the employee will encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.  The position requires the ability to move between and complete a variety of tasks while serving the public.  There are occasional checks that should be maintained on the exterior of the building.  The noise level in the work environment is moderately quiet.
