Fused Glass Jewelry PendantsWednesday, May 22, 5:30-7:30 pm In this introductory glass fusing class you will have the opportunity to create your own wearable art! Introduction to Flameworking: Making BeadsSaturday, June 15 from 10 am to 1 pm Basic bead making techniques will be covered in this 3 hour, introductory class. Learn about safe and proper handling of equipment, tools and materials as well as developing good shapes, pulling stringer, layering color and applying surface decoration. Top Fused Glass Tiles and Coasters Wednesday, June 19 from 5:30-7:30 pm This two-hour, introductory-level glass fusing class gives you the option of exploring many techniques and processes all within one class. You will have the option of creating a series of four similar fused glass pieces, such as a set of coasters, or experimenting with different processes and techniques on four small panels. We will use flat sheet glass, along with stringers, frit, powders and other components to explore a series of pieces. Basic glass fusing techniques and safety will be discussed, and we will explore options and ideas for finishing and displaying fused glass work. Introduction to Borosilicate Flameworking: Making Pendants Tuesday, July 23 5-8 pm This three hour class offers an introduction to working with borosilicate glass through the creation of pendants made on a torch. Basic studio safety and equipment, tools and materials will be discussed, along with the unique properties of borosilicate glass. Borosilicate is considered a hard-glass, having a high melting point, and a high resistance to thermal shock, making it a very durable and user-friendly glass. We will use these properties to create pendants with a pulled loop focusing on basic glassworking techniques, shaping the glass utilizing gravity and graphite tools, and applications of color. Upon completion of this class, you will have a broader understanding of working with glass, and will have created several borosilicate glass pendants. This three hour introductory class will explore the processes of creating an ikebana style vase and a drape style candleholder. The ikebana vase will be created as a flat fused glass piece with a hole in the middle under which will sit a pin-frog style vase component. The drape-style candle holder will be created and designed as a flat fused glass piece, but will then be slumped over a tall narrow form, resulting in a dramatic, freeform candleholder shape. We will discuss basic glass fusing and slumping techniques and studio safety, while utilizing a variety of materials and processes to create one-of-a-kind works of art. Tuesday, August 20 and Wednesday, August 21 5:30-7:30 pm both nights In this dynamic two day class we will design and then use our self-created, custom sheet glass (called part sheets) to make stunning glass platters. Day 1 we will use a pallette of glass stringers, frits and powders with stencils and templates to create uniquely designed part sheets which will be fired flat. We will return Day 2 and explore cutting apart and then combining our part sheets with other fusible materials to create unique glass platters which will be fused and slumped. Available to anyone who has taken an Introduction to Fusing and Slumping or Introduction to Flameworking class. (If you have glass experience and have not taken a class at BMM, please bring in or email examples of your work to be eligible to use our classroom tools or torches. It’s a safety thing.) There will be an instructor on-site available for questions and safety, but no class instructor. Students will work independently, may use our safety glasses and basic tools and may purchase glass rods from our supply. We are a Bullseye Glass studio, so we ask that you please only use Bullseye glass (unless you are doing borosilicate flameworking)
